In these unusual times, it's become more important than ever to ensure our mental and physical well-being. Therefore, the NACE Southern Ontario Student Section decided to host its very first virtual Race with NACE, which consisted of a 5 km walk/run and/or a 10 km bike ride. The virtual event meant that participants could complete their activity on their own terms while remaining socially distant, and took place during the Fall season of 2020. This event was created with the hope to encourage everyone to get moving and take a break from increased screen time, and even sparked many friendly rivalries along the way!

ON THE PROGRESS OF SOSS; REPORT FROM SECTION OFFICERS MEETING IN NACE 2016
Darren Feenstra - Section Vice
The NACE CORROSION conference is a milestone in our calendar year on which we can report our activities of the past year. The board members were able to meet with other student chapters to exchange ideas and give updates on progress. We were able to kick off the reports with our work this year.
“ONE OF THE MAIN GOALS OF THE BOARD THIS YEAR IS TO ESTABLISH STRUCTURE; STARTING A FOUNDATION THAT WE
CAN BUILD THE CHAPTER ON SUCH THAT WE CAN LEAVE AND OTHERS CAN TAKE UP THE REINS WITHOUT SKIPPING A BEAT”
This has been the focus of our efforts this year to create a stable chapter that is not significantly impacted by the turnover of the board. This involved building a brand and marketing it to sponsors and community. These are the areas that we are working on:
Student Symposium: The 6th NACE SOSS symposium is now approaching this July. Each year it is becoming a bigger and better success. This year promises even bigger things; with Western University hosting this year we are planning on potentially having a two day symposium that will feature two industrial talks and one chapter alumni talk along with many talks from the students. There will also be a best paper award that will be judged by a panel of professors, industry and select board members awarded by BioLogic. We also plan to open this event to undergrad students that show interest in pursuing corrosion science. The event will be sponsored by Ontario Power Generation.
Community Outreach: It is important that we as a chapter give back to the community and inspire new people to pursue science and corrosion. We have prepared programs that target high school science classrooms to educate and inspire kids to explore corrosion science as a career opportunity. We have been able to make many contacts with teachers at the annual Science Teachers Association Ontario (STAO) conference. This program will hopefully be ready to launch this September.
Advertisement and Branding: To create structure in our chapter, we have been working building permanent features. We have accomplished this by launching our new website nacesoss.com. This site will be used to introduce new people to our chapter as well as update members of our activities. We will show news from our latest events and symposiums and celebrate our student’s successes. The site will also include a section dedicated to our members and alumni with biographies and current work to help with networking. We are also planning on creating a short promotional video with which to greet visitors to our site. We have also set up a facebook group to help organize events and socialize.
Sponsorship and Industrial Partnership: To sustain our activities it’s important that we establish relationships with local industries that want to support our goals. To help facilitate this effort we have created a sponsorship package which explains how we would use the support. Along with the sponsors mentioned above, we have also started relationships with Biologic and several other sponsors.
Our chapter has made significant progress this year and we are excited for what lies ahead. Thank you for your support and keep up the good work! On behalf of the team here, thank you!
